DownUnderGround is the Australian national BMX flatland contest series. It is a small contest but its main objective is to keep flatland in Australia in the forefront. Round 1 of series 8 took place in the picturesque Belair National Park in Adelaide on the 30th April 2016. This was the first time that DownUnderGround was in South Australia and the Belair location made for a very tranquil setting. It was great to see a good number of beginners who showed up to ride at the competition. They all could not really do anything flatland orientated but they had a great time hanging out with the other riders and feeling the vibe. Let’s hope that some of them keep up the interest and start riding more flatland. The Expert class consisted 3 riders, Matt Wootton from Launceston in Tasmania, Shaun Jarvis from Perth Western Australia and Troy Williams from Whyalla in rural South Australia. The open class had 6 riders, and it was good to see Simon O’Brien back in the contest mode. Paul Chamberlain made the trip from Sydney and Queensland local Lee Kirkman was also in attendance. Clint Miller, the boss man of Colony bmx, a long time DownUnderGround supporter, from Queensland made the journey. Shane Badman and Andras Pentek are now both Adelaide locals and they were there to represent.
The day started with riders meeting up on court 52 at the Belair national park around 10am. A jam started to go down as more riders from other states started to arrive, by 1pm everyone was there. The contest got underway with the beginners who all got one 60 second run, they were pumped. The Expert class was next with each rider getting two 2 minute runs. The open class was the last to roll with they too getting two 2 minute runs. The riders were all judged out of 20 on difficulty, variety and consistency with both the runs being added together to form a total points wins system. At the end of the runs in the open class there was only 2 points between 3rd and 5th, it was a tight contest.
The next 2 rounds of DownUnderGround are up with round 2 the video round now started with entries closing 30th August and round 3 – the finals taking place in Melbourne on the 26 – 27th November.
